THE BUSINESS
Co-founded by Emily Carlson and Blair von Marschall in 2023, Farnorth Interiors began as an exploration around the dinner table of storytelling through design and unfolded into a business committed to bringing connection to self, community, and the natural world through ethical, creative spaces. Farnorth is a boutique design firm located in Flagstaff, Arizona, the ancestral lands of the Navajo, Hopi, Yavapai, and Apache Peoples. We specialize in intersectional design for residential and commercial spaces, as well as select intimate gatherings and microevents.
We believe that good design does not rush. At the heart of our work is a commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and the trust that everything needed to create beautiful, functional spaces is within our reach. At Farnorth, we believe in the reciprocity of well-loved, deeply thoughtful designs. When we care for and invest in the places we dwell in, they care for us in return.

THE TEAM
Emily grew up in the Northwoods of Minnesota, where she developed a deep connection to the natural world. This relationship, blended with her keen artistic eye and extensive work in human psychology, informs her approach to design. She seeks to create spaces where people can truly unfold and be themselves. She believes that we are shaped by the environments we inhabit and approaches every project as an act of stewardship, honoring the character of each place, the stories it holds, and the people who will gather there.
Blair began her residential interior career in 2018. Inspired by her childhood spent living abroad in Spain and Italy and then living in historic cities like DC, Philadelphia, and Charlottesville, her designs create atmospheres that aim to become more beautiful with age. Her approach to interiors is rooted in understanding not only the function of a room, but the feelings a client wants to experience when in a space. She believes that areas that we are emotionally connected to invites the exploration of the parts of ourselves that may otherwise feel unavailable in external environments.
SERVICES
As a full service design studio, we handle everything from the early conceptual phases all the way through construction. We oversee the selection of materials, fixtures, and finishes as well as the sourcing, procurement, and installation of furnishings and decor. Our studio offers each client access to their own unique portal that houses their project’s design package, proposals, designs, timelines, purchase tracking, and communication. We pride ourselves on the transparency of our billing so our clients know exactly what they are receiving when they invest in our services. Utilizing architectural and imaging software we ensure that our designs are not only proportional to the space, but that our clients, contractors, architects, and skilled artisans clearly understand what our desired outcomes will be for any given brief.
Every new client relationship begins with completing our contact form and progresses to a 15 minute discovery call where we hear about the project in greater detail to build your unique and customizable design package.
RESIDENTIAL + COMMERCIAL
Whether designing a private residence, boutique hospitality space, or commercial environment, our services are tailored to the unique needs of each project. Depending on the scope, our work may include space planning, finish and material selection, lighting design, custom furniture and millwork, paint palettes, furniture and décor curation, textile and window treatment selection, artwork and styling, as well as procurement and installation coordination. We also offer virtual design services and design consultations for clients who are seeking professional guidance while managing their own projects. No two projects are alike, and neither are our design packages. We believe every space should be distinctive, so our services are intentionally flexible, no matter if you are refreshing a single room, reimagining an existing space, or undertaking a complete renovation or new build. Our role is to bring clarity, cohesion, and thoughtful craftsmanship to every stage of the design process while creating environments that are both strikingly personal and beautifully purposeful. Trade pricing is available for qualifying design packages.
MICRO EVENTS
Our approach to intimate gatherings is rooted in the conviction that meaningful moments deserve to happen in thoughtfully designed environments. We curate bespoke events for up to 30 guests through intentional material selection, atmospheric styling, and a deeply personalized design methodology that reflects the people gathering together. We transform each setting into an immersive experience that feels effortless and authentic.
By engaging every sense through texture, light, scent, and carefully considered details, we create environments that invite connection and presence. Working alongside planners, florists, caterers, and other creative partners, we ensure every element comes together seamlessly to create an occasion that feels as stunning as it is profound from concept development, curation and sourcing, to styling and installation of the fine details.
A Note on Ethical Design
In an industry susceptible to fast fashion trends and unchecked carbon footprints, our goal is to bring gorgeous and fulfilling spaces to our clients while keeping our own impact in balance. We seek to slow down product turnover by infusing spaces with antiques, vintage and found items, and high quality pieces that stand the test of time. We pursue diversity and anti-colonialist design by focusing on the equity and inclusion of eco-friendly, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and grassroots brands. We aim to be good stewards of the natural landscapes that hold our homes, businesses, and celebrations and will continue to learn how to implement climate-conscious design for environmental sustainability. Lastly, we maintain that spaces should be usable as much as they are beautiful; therefore, we actively consider accessibility features in our designs.
